Lifetime estimates of lost work productivity, health care costs, special education costs, child welfare expenses, and criminal justice expenditures add up to $585 billion. As many as two-thirds of the people in alcohol and drug treatment reported being abused or neglected as children. Children who experience child abuse and neglect are 9 times more likely to become involved in criminal activity. Abused children are 25% more likely to become a teenage parent.

All adults in TN are mandated reporters for child abuse under state law. Anyone with reasonable belief that a child is being abused, must report immediately to the Department of Children's Services or local law enforcement. Reporters can remain anonymous and are free from civil and criminal liability when the report is made in good faith. Failure to report is a Class A misdemeanor with a sentence of up to three months in jail, a fine, or both.
